With my 4 step process, working together we can get you feeling better and back to the activities you love
1. Listen and Understand
Everybody has a story and no two stories are the same. I believe your story matters and is part of unlocking what brought you to come see me in the first place. Our bodies are intelligent and remember passed injuries, bad habits (like carrying a purse over the same shoulder every day), and holding tension from stress and/or conditions of the body and mind. Our bodies compensate over and over again until it results in limited mobility, flexibility and eventually pain.
We will go over a diagram together of where you are experiencing pain, discomfort, and/or limitations currently and prioritize the areas that have the greatest effect on your daily life so you feel relief as soon as possible. We will also go over any medical history, medications and current recommendations from your healthcare providers to get a whole picture of what your health plan is and how Yoga Therapy can help support that plan.
Time to get moving! Now that I have a good understanding of how you’re feeling it’s time to gather some information on how the body is moving:
- What is moving well that should be
- What is moving that shouldn’t be
- What isn’t moving well that should be
We will use some exercises to gather this information. These are usually small movements with props (straps, blocks, blankets, bolsters, rollers) that help us get a good understanding of how your body is moving well and where you’re limited. Your story is a piece of the assessment but the body will tell even more of that story, part of which you may be completely unaware of. I’ll teach you about the ‘warning signs’ your body is trying to communicate and help you become more aware what these signs look like and feel like so you are only working in a pain-free and warning sign free range of motion.
3. Personalized Practice
Your very own personalized Yoga Therapy Practice. From the assessment we will know which exercises to start you on to provide the quickest relief first. Often that looks like a mix of resting poses, breathwork and gentle exercises. The practice is about quality not quantity or length. Typically we would start with 4 exercises and see how that fits into your life and adjust as we need/want to in your follow up appointments. It really is a personal experience tailored just for you so we can work on this together to find what suits you.
Practice Plans – choose what works best for you:
- Pen and paper with diagrams and notes specific to your practice
- Electronic version
- Youtube videos you can follow along with made specifically for you
4. Refine, Retrain and Re-load
Once you are moving better, we refine the movements further which retrains the body how to move the way it was designed to move which in turn… you got it… means you’ll feel better in your body.
So now you’re moving better and feeling better which is great but the funny thing is you start to wonder hmmm if this is possible what else is possible? Go for it! We then Re-load. Adding load means increasing the difficulty/length of the exercises, or your activities and increasing repetitions/weight etc. When you add load you’ll notice new compensations/warning signs and we’ll adjust the exercises to support whatever it is you’ve added until you reach your goals.
